摘要

         In this presentation we introduce the method of catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) that thermochemically converts lignocellulosic biomass into liquid fuels and chemicals. An intermediate produced during CFP, furan, as well as its derivatives, was used as a model compound for developing catalyst and understanding reaction mechanism. The major valuable products were ethylene, propylene, benzene, toluene, and xylenes (olefins & BTX). Olefins can be recycled to increase BTX yield. Interestingly, the reaction of furans with the recycled olefins produced specific aromatic compounds, toluene & xylenes, following the rule of Diels-Alder cycloaddition. Further introduction of shape-selective catalysts shifted the reaction to the production of p-xylene, which is industrially used to make a recyclable plastic, PET. In other words, furan CFP can be tuned to produce targeted aromatics. This finding has made furan more important in the research of green energy. In the extension, more research about furan application and production were reviewed. Integration of these processes with furan CFP appears to be important for future research. The CFP process is now under commercialization in Anellotech Inc.
