Abstract

Chemistry occupies unique position in the field of science. Materials generated in chemistry, though they are bulk, they have exercised tremendous attraction for many applications. It is worthy to mention that most of the life saving drugs and pharmaceutical intermediates and fine chemicals are derived from immiscible substances reactions. Phase transfer catalysis (PTC) is one of the most prominent accepted tool which addresses the problem of immiscible substrate reactions. Similarly, in the last few decades nanoscience and nanotechnology have emerged as incontestable topics of high level research by providing materials of tremendous applications to society. Research in nano science has entered almost all areas of science.  Researchers around the world have integrated the nanomaterials to form new nanohybrid materials bearing unexpected physical, chemical and biological properties for many applications. Specifically, in the area of catalysis, drug delivery, bone-tissue engineering, electrochemistry and Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS). The advanced nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes (CNT), dendrimers, metal chalcogenides, graphene oxide and graphitic carbon nitride have received much attention in the recent past due to their exceptional physical and chemical properties. In this presentation, I will state my 25 years of research experience particularly in the development of phase transfer catalysts from single site to multi-sites to catalyse many reactions of industrial relevance. Additionally, designing of CNT and dendrimers (symmetrical polymer), and metal nanoparticles for the application of catalysis and electrochemical sensing of life saving drugs will be highlighted.  Development of carbon materials like graphitic carbon nitride, graphene oxide and their nanohybrids containing metal nanoparticles and metal chalcogenides are used in catalysis & SERS sensing of valuable organic molecules and electrochemical sensor for pharmaceutical formulations also forms the main part of my presentation.

M.SC., Phil., Ph.D., FRSC.,

Prof. Dr. E. Murugan, was born on 10.06.1968 at Periphery of Chennai, it is a International City located in South India, Tamil Nadu, After completion of is Schooling and Under graduation at nearby place of Chennai, he studied M.Sc. at Anna University, Chennai-25 and M.Phil. at University of Madras and received the degrees with first class. Then he joined for Ph.D. course at Department of Physical Chemistry at University of Madras and completed the research in “Tri-phase catalysis/kinetics and received Ph.D. degree on 1998. Subsequently, he joined as a Assistant Professor at Department of Chemistry, Gandhigram University (Central Univesity), Government of India. Then he joined as a Faculty Member at Department of Physical Chemistry, School of Chemical Sciences, University of Madras during 2000 and from such time onwards he worked hard in the research in the broad title “Catalysis” and subsequently he has been teaching Physical Chemistry particularly in the area of Quantum Chemistry, Thermodynamics and Chemical Kinetics for M.Sc. and M.Phil. students. He did his post-doctoral studies at Oklahoma State University, Still Water, USA with Prof. W. T. Ford during 2002 to

2003 in the area of ‘Dendrimer Catalysis and Carbon Nanotubes”. He is recipient of National Young Scientist award during 2002 and recipient of Best Tamilnadu State Scientist award in chemistry for the year 2015. Then become Director-Guindy Campus, Chairperson, School of Chemical Sciences and Professor and Head, Department of Physical Chemistry. He is a fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and also recipient of various scientific apex bodies. He visited nearly 4 countries including USA, Singapore, Oman and Srilanka for research interactive meetings and conferences.
