摘要

           A critical element of fulfilling current energy demand is to improve efficiency of energy usage from fossil fuel, such as coal and natural gas. High efficiency of utilizing these fuels can be realized by Fuel Cell technology, as chemical energy is directly converted to electric energy. Here the central problem is to control chemical reactions on the electrode and its catalysis. Probing adsorbed species at the surface and intermediates on the course of reaction, e.g. methane oxidation, allows determination of reaction pathway on the anode. I will show that these surface reactions can be investigated by in-situ Infared/Mass spectroscopy and transient techniques with link to cell performance, thus allowing better design of electrocatalyst. I will also show how we arrive at a deeper understanding of reaction mechanism in a new technology, Direct Carbon Fuel Cell. These work provide an illustration of a fruitful interplay between principles of chemical engineering and practical application.

 Dr. Andrew C. Chien has a strong background in Catalysis and Fuel Cell with several

 years of industrial and postdoctoral experience in Taiwan, US, UK, and Swiss. His

 research work cover hydrocarbon/ solid carbon fuel cell, and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,

 hydrogen storage, and ceramic membrane for gas separation. In his independent

 research career, he has developed his expertise in solid state chemistry to develop

 catalytic and energy material, as well as high temperature electrochemistry for energy

 conversion and storage. He is currently an assistant professor in Dept. of Chemical

 Engineering and Green Energy Development Center at Feng-Chia University since Feb.

 2017. He holds rewards for recruiting outstanding talents and research grants supported

 by Ministry of Science and Technology in Taiwan for development of Direct Carbon Fuel

 Cell.
