About the Department

HISTORY

The Department of Chemical Engineering was established in 1931 as the Department of Applied Chemistry of Tainan Technical College founded by the Japanese authority. After the Restoration of Taiwan in 1945, it was reorganized and eventually changed to the present status in 1946. The Department has offered the Bachelor of Science degree since the establishment of the Department. In addition, post-graduate study leading to Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees were initiated in 1962 and 1969, respectively. Current enrollment in the department as Academic Year 2015 is about 559 undergraduate students, 215 MS students and 52 PhD candidates. Over 6000 chemical engineers graduated from the department since its inception. Most of the graduates have successful careers, either domestically or overseas in industry, research institutes and academia. Recently, in order to show their gratitude to the department, the alumni have established an educational endowment foundation to facilitate teaching and research related activities of the department.

FACULTY

The Department has largest faculty in Department of Chemical Engineering in Taiwan, including 1 Chair Professor Emeritus, 6 Professor Emeritus, and 38 full-time (27 Professor, 5 Associate Professor, 5 Assistant Professor, and 1 Lecturer). All the faculty members in this department are active in the research work. Broad spectra of research topics in related fields of chemical engineering are also reflected in the research outcomes of faculty members in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Based on the research themes, the major research fields in the department are generally categorized in four fields, including Biotechnology and Bioengineering (17%), Optoelectronic Materials and Nanoengineering (29%), Energy Technology and Process System Engineering (28%), and Polymers Materials and Engineering (26%). Note that the percentage in the parentheses is the proportion of the Professor’s expertise in these four fields.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH FACILITIES

The department building is a twelve-storey building. There are five audiovisual amphitheaters, locating on the basement, the first floor, third floor, fourth floor, respectively, for large-sized class, seminar, and conference. There are also sky garden and open area on the balcony of the fifth floor for students to discuss and get refreshment.

In addition that each full-time faculty member has his/her own laboratory, the department has several common laboratories and teaching laboratories for undergraduates, which are all accessible to all faculty members and students. The main equipments in the common laboratories include SEM with EDX, TEM, AFM, XRD, DSC, TGA, FT-IR, HPLC, GC-MS, etc. Other major instruments, such as ESCA/XPS, HR-TEM, SQUID, ICP-MS, NMR and so on, are available university-wide. References and academic journals either in print or in electronic formats are available in the NCKU.

State-of-art teaching facility is available in the department to help lecturers to provide creative and interactive learning environments for students. Each classroom in the department is provided with multimedia facility and internet access. Teaching videos on selected courses are available in the department as well.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the National Cheng Kung University has been successful in attracting highly qualified and talented students since its establishment. The overall goal of our educational programs is to challenge our students to maximize their potential, motivation and competence in their careers throughout their lives. In particular, we aim at

1. Diversified and Balanced development of Teaching and Research

2. Laying equal stress on students' fundamental knowledge and technical capability in the practice of chemical engineering, and nurture of quality leaders

3. Internationalization of the department

4. Root in industry-academic cooperation
